Reverse
Engineering is the process of duplicating an item, functionally
and dimensionally, by physically examining and measuring existing
parts to develop the technical data (physical and material characteristics)
required for competitive procurement. [As defined by Military Handbook
MIL-HDBK-115(ME)]
Reverse
Engineering also involves creating a purchasing specification and
drawing(s) for the item. The purchasing specification and drawing
are forwarded to the customer for review and approval. The customer
now has the ability to purchase this item from a source other than
the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
